A Safer Future for Edmonton’s Streets

My Vision for Traffic Safety

Safety on our streets is fundamental to building a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant Edmonton. As our city continues to grow rapidly, so must our commitment to reducing traffic injuries and fatalities, protecting families, and creating neighbourhoods where everyone feels secure.

According to a recent article by the CBC, Edmonton could reach a new 10-year peak for fatal vehicle collisions this year. Behind those statistics are lost family members and friends. As your Mayor it will be my priority to do everything we can to prevent these tragedies with smart policies that can save lives.

Prioritizing Community Safety

Every Edmontonian deserves to feel secure navigating their neighbourhood. Whether it’s young families heading out the door in the morning, seniors crossing busy streets, or children walking to school, safety is about how we feel when we’re out and about.

My goal is simple: safe neighbourhoods.

Traffic Safety - More Than Just Statistics

Traffic fatalities and injuries are preventable, and no loss of life is acceptable. For Edmonton to be truly family-friendly, we need to prioritize pedestrian safety, safe crossings, and safe driving through innovative, evidence-based approaches.

Expanding Proven Programs

I am committed to building upon programs that already work:

  • Safe Crossings Program: I will ensure we upgrade 100 crosswalks each year, making crossing streets safer for pedestrians, especially children and seniors.

  • Vision Zero Street Labs: These community-led, data-driven projects allow neighborhoods to identify and implement quick safety improvements. I will continue to empower communities to lead these initiatives, turning data into safer streets.

  • Safe Mobility Strategy: As Edmonton’s growth accelerates, I will update and expand this strategy, ensuring it addresses current challenges and future demands.

Innovative Technologies and AI

Edmonton has the chance to lead in adopting AI-enabled traffic safety technologies. By exploring smart signals, dangerous driver recognition, and traffic prediction tools, we can optimize traffic flow and reduce accidents - following the successful models of cities like Vancouver, Montreal, and New York.

Cracking Down on Noisy and Dangerous Vehicles

Excessive noise and reckless driving threaten our community’s tranquility and safety. I will establish dedicated Traffic Safety Teams modeled after Calgary’s successful approach to crack down on excessively noisy vehicles and unsafe drivers. These teams will enforce bylaws, promote safe driving, and coordinate with police to ensure our streets are calmer and safer.

Investing in Safer Infrastructure

Engineering solutions are a cornerstone of traffic safety. I will prioritize the ongoing upgrade of intersections, crosswalks, and traffic signals. I am committed to expanding the Traffic Signals Program, ensuring that new signals are added where needed and existing ones are modernized to improve safety and traffic flow.

Supporting Vision Zero and Life-Saving Initiatives

After a number of years of success, traffic fatalities are back on the rise.

In 2020, I made a motion that resulted in Vision Zero Street labs. I have a strong track record of implementing innovative solutions to improve traffic safety. As Mayor I will work to make our streets safe.

After years of success we should not be seeing a rise in traffic fatalities. We need to reverse this trend.

Supporting the Vision Zero approach means zero traffic fatalities. I will continue to invest in proven solutions, like the Safe Crossing Program and Vision Zero initiatives, which have already saved lives and reduced injuries.

Traffic safety is about more than statistics - it’s about families feeling secure every time they cross the street, children going to school safely, and seniors navigating busy roads. Edmonton’s future depends on safe streets that serve our community’s needs.

As your Mayor, I will leverage technology, enforce safety laws, and invest in engineering solutions that make Edmonton’s streets safer for everyone. Together, we can achieve a city where traffic fatalities are a thing of the past and every Edmontonian feels confident heading out their front door.
