Edmonton Transit Strategy

What Moves You?

The City of Edmonton began its Transit Strategy Review in the summer of 2015 by asking Edmontonians this question.  In order to ensure our City has a unique transit system that fits our local context we need to come up with solutions by imagining what our City will look like years from now. What would a successful transit system look like in Edmonton?  Increased ridership and ease of commute in our winter city?  Would it mean increased economic development and competitiveness?  Or better yet, a system that is accessible and affordable for all?   We need to look at transit as more than just a way to move us from one point to another, but instead look at how it moves us.

Check out this video from NextGen’s Pecha Kucha on transit https://youtu.be/8b6t-WrLHpQThe Transit Strategy Review includes four phases in its timeline:

Phase 1: Awareness and Education Jun 2015 to Oct 2015

Phase 2: Vision Sep 2015 to Dec 2015

Phase 3: Explore Trade Offs Jan 2016 to Oct 2016

Phase 4: Strategy Development Nov 2016 to Mar 2017 During the first two phases, the city engaged with more than 10,000 Edmontonians to talk transit.  Four major themes emerged as top priorities:

  • Connecting people with major destinations such as workplaces, universities/colleges, shopping areas, higher density neighbourhoods and regional communities.

  • Increases the number of people who can get around more efficiently.

  • Provides transportation for people who can’t drive or can’t afford to drive.

  • Provides all Edmontonians with a choice of transportation options.

Check out the complete report hereIn the next two phases, the City will be exploring the trade-offs and strategy development of the review, before returning to Council with its findings early next year. You are invited to help make choices for the future plan of transit. There is a workshop I’d encourage you to attend, whether you use transit or not.  It’s important we hear from all Edmontonians as transit is something that will impact all communities.
